Start at the Historic Tower Tree Square in the heart of Downtown Greensburg. The Decatur County Courthouse is not just the home of the Tree on the Tower but was the site of the case: State of Indiana vs. Luther Donnell.  Mr. Donnell himself (thanks to a re-enactor) will tell you how he came to be sued by a Kentucky slave owner for loss of property (Caroline and her four children), as well as, how the case turned out. You’ll get the chance to see the Tree as well as a bit of the courthouse!

Group heads from the courthouse and splits into two. Group 1 will head to Jean’s for a class in a make it and take it quilt block. You will make a block from this unique time and take it home with you. Group 2 will head to the historical society for a tour of its new facility which is home to many artifacts from the UGRR including portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Donnell donated by his descendants.

Day 3
Morning Continental Breakfast at the hotel and check-out.

Board the bus and travel a short distance to the newly renovated Southern Indiana Railroad Freight House and home to the Jackson County Visitor Center. This area, the center of railroad activity in Seymour, was at one time home to three different railway lines, a roundhouse repair shop, the Adams Express Company, and the interurban.

Step on board as we travel back in time to April 14, 1860 when Alexander McClure, a slave living in from Nashville, Tennessee, arranged for himself to  be boxed and shipped to “Hannah M. Johnson” in care of Levi Coffin in Cincinnati, Ohio. Listen to a re-enactor tell of the perilous flight of Alexander McClure in his quest for freedom. Hear what happened after the box carrying Alexander being transferred to another rail line in Seymour broke open and he was revealed.

While visiting the freight house you’ll have the opportunity to view a pictorial exhibit of Jackson County’s railway history. Learn how the railroad was instrumental in the founding of Seymour!

Step back on board the motor coach and tour the Quaker Cemeteries of Jackson County.
Lunch

Your lunch destination, The Chocolate Spoon, is just a short drive from the freight house. You will delight in the home-style lunches served with Southern Indiana hospitality. The café offers a variety of lunch menus including homemade soups and sandwiches. Don’t forget to pick up a sweet treat for the ride home. Enjoy your trip home!
